Resolutions

January 13th, 2013 by Sheri No comments »

I have made a resolution of self-sustainability. Back in September, I embarked on a new health plan, following the recommendations I learned from years of research presented by numerous physicians in a movie called Forks Over Knives. Since starting on an exercise program and changing my eating habits, I have gone down two clothes sizes, lost 30 pounds my stress levels are manageable and feel great!

The key here is lifestyle change. Diets don’t work. They are comparable to putting an adhesive bandage on a gangrene leg. Fix the infection. Or better yet, prevent the infection in the first place.

Make your own resolution to personal health – sustainable health. You deserve it.

Happy Holidays

30 Years Later…

October 4th, 2012 by Sheri 1 comment »

I used to run every day. Of course, that was back in my early years in high school.

Last November, I decided to stop being a couch potato and start moving my way back to health. I downloaded an app called C25K. It promised to have me from the (C) couch (2) to running a 5K in 9 weeks. When I started the program, I thought, “NO WAY!” Well, here I am 11 months later running in the Susan G. Komen 5K Race For The Cure.

Let me be honest here – it was a tough 11 months of training. I would get up at 5AM and play the mental game of, “you can’t stop… keep running… you can breathe later.” One of my head game motivators was the TV show Biggest Looser. If they can endure, why can’t I? So I kept running. My friends supported me and daily cheered me on through Facebook. My husband would cheer me on and smile at me, even thought I came home sweaty and smelly. My daughter Zoe would encourage me to keep on running.

The day of the race (30 years after my last 5K race), it was cold. I could not feel my feet for at least the first 3K, but I had a personal goal to beat my best time of 6.05/K and try to run the whole 5K under 30 minutes. Just over half way through the race, I rounded a corner and both my husband and daughter were there to cheer me on. That gave me the burst to continue on and keep working the pace.

I crossed the finish line at 29.57. I beat my goal and raised money for a worthy cause. And yes, I went home sweaty and smelly and with a huge smile of satisfaction on my face!

Week One Success

September 18th, 2012 by Sheri No comments »

I was nervous about my first week on the new food program. I can be an emotional eater, so those 3:00 PM cravings are down-right frightening. The good news is that the cravings have not gotten the best of me and I have a TON of left-overs in the freezer. My husband loved the recipe choices.

My youngest daughter is quite a choosy eater and hard to please, but fueled by our enthusiasm to get healthy, she promised to try a bite of everything new we prepared. One night, I asked her if she would like to prepare dinner and she said she would like to make vegetable soup. I was in charge of chopping and she was in charge of cooking. Dinner was not only healthy, but delicious. She even ate the soup – a first!

A Challenge:
We used to make pizza every Friday night. When we switched to a vegan diet, we chose Daiya mozzarella and really liked it. Now that we have eliminated all oil and need to find gluten-free alternatives, pizza has been gone :-(  I have challenged Anthony at the Whole Foods Wellness Center to see if they could recommend an alternative crust. I’ll report back if we find anything good.

Day 2: A Surprising Discovery

September 9th, 2012 by Sheri No comments »

This morning I woke up feeling pretty good. I was happy to make it through the first day without sneaking one of Zoe’s chocolate chip cookies. A few hours after being up and about, I fixed my smoothie – it seems to be my breakfast of choice.

Zoe and I went to church in the morning and packed our snack – coffee/snack at the church are usually foods that we aren’t eating. I packed a sliced apple and was glad I did, for around 11:30 I was beginning to feel a bit hungry. Zoe (with her class) went to the children’s garden and they harvested carrots. She was very excited!

When we got home, I had leftovers from last night’s dinner. This was not from the batch I froze – I told you it made a lot! I had about a cup’s worth, then off to Hamilton’s SeptemberFest with Zoe I went. We were there for a few hours and had a great time.

I usually prepare hummus for my week’s lunches. Lunches have been a whole wheat wrap with roasted red pepper hummus, kale leaves and fresh sliced tomatoes. The problem is, my hummus either contained olive oil or tahini – neither of which are allowed in my diet now. So, referring to my “Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease” book, I found a no-tahini hummus recipe. It was for a standard garlic hummus, so I tried it. It was delicious! When I tasted it, I had a strange reaction. This was a similar reaction that I had last night.

The Big Surprise:
I tasted the hummus (and last night’s dinner) and felt pings of guilt, as if I were cheating. The food tasted so incredibly fresh and good that it couldn’t possibly be healthy. There MUST be something wrong with it. But alas, I had personally prepared both, so I knew all of the ingredients that were in it. So why the guilt? Not sure, but the feelings were reactionary and really caught me off guard. I guess time will help in the correlation between great taste and healthy rather than pleasure and guilt.

Dinner tonight was a bit of creativity. I had two beautiful portobello mushrooms and the evening was beautiful (a rare moment this summer). We decided to grill the mushrooms with some green bell peppers and onion. We added some of the hummus to our plates and voila… dinner!

So, tomorrow is another day. Since I work from home, it will be a challenge to ward off the 3:00pm cravings. Carrots and apple slices are looking good!

See you tomorrow :-)

Day 1

September 8th, 2012 by Sheri 1 comment »

What an exciting adventure.

It started with cleaning out our pantry of all the “non-healthy” choices. Bye, bye health inhibitors…

We (my husband and younger daughter) went to the West Windsor Farmers Market with a list and a purpose. We were shopping to fill our lives with local, healthy, organic, plant-based foods. Normally we spend about $30 on fruits and veggies – this week we spent $65! I have to say that we spent some serious money at AR & Sons Organic Market. They, by far, have THE BEST garlic of anyone EVER! We were able to secure potatoes, eggplant, parsley, tomatoes, watermelon and the garlic at an amazingly affordable price – local and organic. Terhune also had an amazing array of peppers and herbs. The morning was quite successful.

Next, we went to Whole Foods in Princeton. We stuck to our list to buy only what would meet our new dietary needs. Even our six year old (pickiest eater alive) said she was giving up frozen waffles and mac and cheese, and that she would try raisins and brown rice. Seriously?!? Wh0 body-snatched her?

While at Whole Foods, I spoke to Anthony Dissen, their Wellness Club Chef/Educator. He is always extremely welcoming, offering real solutions to member’s everyday issues. He offered words of encouragement and expressed genuine interest in our well being.

We ventured over to the produce section and bought a ton of real food. It was exciting and empowering. Then, we went home, unloaded the groceries, and realized this was it – no turning back… ever.

My daily diet for today looked like this:

BREAKFAST
1 mug of decaf Pike Place (coffee) with oat milk
Fruit Smoothy

LUNCH

  • Wholewheat pasta with homemade tomato sauce (no oil)

DINNER
Direct from the “Prevent and Reverse Hearth Disease”, (pg. 252)

  • Antonia Demas’ Couscous and African Stew.

One day towards better health!

A New Beginning

September 7th, 2012 by Sheri No comments »

Life is full of choices. I have written about ways to limit your external chemical exposures. Now I embark on the internal.

There were two films that changed my life. The first was Food, Inc.

I always thought I was a conscious shopper. You know, support the locals, shop organic … but then all of those “no cage” eggs and “cage free” packages of chicken came to light in the movie. I was horrified. Seriously?!? Loopholes don’t work for me. If I am trying to be a compassionate person, I don’t want a corporation tricking me into eating inhumane and unsafe food.

The second life changer was Forks Over Knives.

We were buying our meat and cheese from local farms, but the scientific evidence of animal protein being the catalyst for our own health issues was overwhelming. I have plenty of family history of health issues (who doesn’t), but I don’t want to live in defense mode. I want to be proactive in a healthy life. I want to control my destiny as much as possible.

After watching the two movies, I treated myself to a Mother’s Day gift of a Whole Foods Wellness Center Membership and read Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, book, “Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease.

Four months ago, I chose to live a vegan lifestyle. After reading this book, I am excited to embark on a whole food, plant-based diet, free from the processes of agribusiness. This means the elimination of all oils (will be tough at first, but we’ll adjust), all processed foods and the consumption of a whole lot of fresh fruits and veggies.

So tomorrow, it’s off to the farmers market, Whole Foods and a new beginning!

I will share my journey to a healthier lifestyle, including recipes, tips and how I overcome the challenges. I invite you to share your experiences in your journeys as well.

Men Deserve Great Skin Care Too

July 26th, 2012 by Sheri No comments »

Men's Mud Mask

.

Just like women, men can be prone to problem skin. In fact, men tend to have oilier skin than women and that can lead to an environment prone to acne, blackheads, pimples, clogged pores and more. Whether you use a foam-based shaving cream/gel or just soap and water, if you are a man that shaves regularly, you could be leaving your skin out to dry. So, the question then becomes, do men have different skin care news than women? Yes, and no.

According to the International Spa Association, 31% of spa-goers are men. Euromonitor reports that the men’s skin care market grew over 7% between 2009-2010 reaching over $29 billion dollars.

Although men may have different needs in terms of skin type, skin care products are marketed differently primarily to perception. In reality, men can use the same products and brands as women and should adhere to the same basic recommended regiment: cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and protect.

CLEANSE
Use a gentle cleanser without harsh ingredients. If you have dry skin, use a moisturizing cleanser. If you have oily skin, use a balancing cleanser.

EXFOLIATE
Tackle those problem areas with a relaxing mud mask. You can even do this in the comfort of your own home.

MOISTURIZE
Be sure and choose the appropriate moisturizer for your skin type. Again, if you are the dry-skin type, use something a bit more intense. If you tend to be a more oily complexion, then choose a light or balancing moisturizer.

PROTECT
Finally, if you are planning to be outside for prolonged periods, don’t forget your sun protection. According to the EWG (Environmental Working Group), ingredients matter and you should check the labels before you buy and apply.

Avoid these chemicals

  • Oxybezone
  • Vitamin A (retinyl palmitate)
  • and added insect repellent

Ingredients that work

  • Zinc or titanium (1st choice)
  • Avobenzone (2nd choice)

Book Review & Contest: Kristi Marsh’s “Little Changes”

“LITTLE CHANGES”

Little Changes

Contributed by Representative Erin Demory

Our feature author this month seems very appropriate because, in a sense, she is a lot like the MiCommunity Team members: She has found her calling and is extremely passionate about it, and her calling, like ours, is the elimination of toxic chemicals from her life and the move towards making sustainable and environmentally conscious decisions. Plus, she is doing so while educating and sharing her journey with others in a lighthearted manner, reassuring us we are not alone as we enter an often confusing and overwhelming territory, and ultimately helping us to make wiser choices. Like the MiCommunity Team, the more she learned and made changes, the more she wanted to share her knowledge and experiences with others. With that said, we are very excited to introduce Kristi Marsh and her book “Little Changes”.

Diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer at age thirty-six and with three young children at home, Kristi started on a quest to eliminate harmful chemicals from her life and environment. Now a proponent for environmental health, Kristi’s passion is to share her knowledge and journey with others. “So many people are reluctant to make changes in their lives because they think it’s going to be expensive or time consuming. But making little changes over time in the products we smother on our skin, foods we devour, and surroundings in which we immerse ourselves, doesn’t have to be difficult.” Kristi founded Choose Wiser, an organization dedicated to educating people about the interaction between environmental toxins and their health, and empower and encourage them to raise the bar on the products they purchase and bring into their homes by becoming savvy, aware consumers.

In 2009, Kristi started sharing her dynamic message with women home-party style, visiting mom’s groups, book clubs, and church groups. In a few short months, her audiences grew, as word spread of her engaging talks and workshops. She has presented her message to nurses at Faulkner Hospital, and to women’s conferences in Boston, Springfield, MA, and Dallas. Kristi will also be speaking at Purdue University in 2012. She empowers her audiences to choose wiser products with kinder, simpler ingredients, giving themselves the gift of the best life possible.

Her first book, “Little Changes”, is a succulent swirling lollipop of lessons about the products we smother on our skin, foods we devour, and surroundings in which we immerse ourselves. A gut-wrenching roller coaster of emotions, her adventure involves a Western Grebe, farm stand spinach, a meaty love story, a rock in Wyoming, and some pioneers-which eventually captured national attention.

With a cup of humor, a smidgeon of sarcasm, and a wallop of mainstream motherhood, Little Changes enlightens readers about the simmering, swelling, epic transformation of our generation; becoming self-advocates for their own environmental health.

Kristi has been recognized by Prevention Magazine’s Picture of Health, Clean Water Action’s 2011 John O’Connor Award, Healthy Living Magazine’s Champion of Health 2010 Awards, and Greenschool’s 2009 Outstanding Leadership Awards. Her dynamic speaking skills earned her 2nd place in Toastmasters 2011 International Speech Contest in Massachusetts. She was the visionary behind the Black Tie and Denim Gala, a fundraising event that raised over $40,000 for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. She lives with her family near Boston, Massachusetts. Checkout Kristi’s website Choose Wiser for tons of great “getting started” tips, blog posts, and more.
